Jaworek third-graders’ great bedtime story
(12/11/13) - The entire Jaworek Elementary third-grade class has had a three-week long pajama party, of sorts. The 120 students and their teachers participated in “The Great Bedtime Story Pajama Drive.” Ever since Thanksgiving, the students have been bringing in new pajamas – sizes infant through adult – to benefit families in need.

Scholastic Reading Club in cooperation with the Pajama Program collected pajamas again this year to distribute with books to disadvantaged children ages birth through 17 to help make their winter a little warmer. The Pajama Project coordinates the PJ donations, and Scholastic donates a book for every pajama donated. Classes were invited to participate in the project, and Jaworek’s third-graders took the invitation to heart.

The students and staff donated a whopping 122 pajama sets in just three weeks. The donations will be used locally, in the metro west area, which adds to the pride and ownership everyone has in the project.

The teachers have taken the project an academic step farther: They created a math activity about it. A bulletin board in the third-grade hallway sports a graph in which each pajama cut-out equals a certain number of pajamas donated. Students had to analyze the board and complete a worksheet about the pictograph as part of their math graphing unit.

On Dec. 10, the last day of the project, the Jaworek students had a real pajama party to celebrate. Third-grade students and teachers spent the school day in their winter jammies, a visual reminder of how a group of people can make a difference.

The Joy of Art
On Nov. 18, Jaworek first- and third-graders were treated to a visit from Cambridge resident and street artist Bren Bataclan, who has given away more than 150,000 of his paintings on the condition that each recipient “promises to smile at people more often.” Bataclan’s work is dedicated to the positive power of art and how the simple gesture of leaving a painting for free can spread joy and laughter. His presentation teaches children the power of kindness and sharing by creating their own art. During his visit to Jaworek, he guided students to draw a penguin, a cat and a robot on their individual white boards without erasing anything because “everything you draw will be beautiful.” Below are some highlights of his visit with Jaworek first-graders. For more information on Bataclan’s art, visit www.bataclan.com.

On Sept. 20, the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) released its 2013 information about school accountability, how our school is performing relative to other schools, and the progress our school is making toward narrowing proficiency gaps for different groups of students. To access the Jaworek parent letter (three languages) regarding this information and the district- and school-level DESE “report cards,” see our NCLB Report Card webpage.

Parents: Starting with the 2012-13 school year, the district implemented a standards-based report card system. These report cards differ from those in the past; the new report cards reflect the Common Core standards embedded in the district’s new curriculum. Feedback on the report cards will be collected periodically to identify and develop revisions as needed. To access a parent pamphlet on the standards-based report cards, click:  English - Portuguese - Spanish. To access a glossary of terms and phrases, click: EnglishPortugueseSpanish.
